EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured copperplate engraving by Verico, from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1847, depicts two of the most renowned Anglo-Saxon monarchs of the 9th century: King Edgar of England and King Alfred of Wessex. King Edgar, also known as Edgar the Peaceful, is shown on the left, wearing a simple yet elegant tunic and a crown adorned with precious stones. His serene expression and the peaceful aura around him reflect his reputation as a just and benevolent ruler. Edgar's reign (959-975 AD) marked a period of stability and prosperity for England, which was crucial after a series of turbulent centuries. On the right, King Alfred the Great of Wessex is portrayed with a determined and thoughtful expression. He is dressed in a military outfit, symbolizing his military prowess and leadership skills. Alfred, who is often referred to as Alfred the Great, was a significant figure in Anglo-Saxon history for his military victories against the Vikings and his efforts to promote education and culture. His reign (871-899 AD) is considered a golden age for Wessex and the English people. This illustration offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the historical significance of these two monarchs and the critical role they played in shaping the history of England during the 9th century.
