1531 Concepts Diego Garment Guadalupe Imprinted Juan Mexico Miraculously Nuestra Peasant Senora
EDITORS COMMENTS
Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, the revered Virgin Mary venerated in Mexico, is depicted in this historic image, believed to be the miraculous imprint left on the garment of Juan Diego, a humble peasant, in 1531. This significant event, which took place during the colonial era, unfolded in the rugged terrain of Tepeyac Hill, just north of Mexico City. Juan Diego, a devoutly religious man, was on his way to Mexico City to seek the advice of Bishop Juan de Zumárraga when he encountered the Virgin Mary. She asked him to request the bishop to build a church on the site of her apparition. Juan Diego, who was initially skeptical, returned to the bishop three times with his story. Each time, he presented the bishop with roses from the site as evidence, but the bishop remained unconvinced. On the third encounter, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego once more, this time leaving an image of herself on his tilma, a traditional garment worn by the indigenous people. The image, which is still preserved today, shows the Virgin Mary with dark skin, dressed in native clothing, and holding the infant Jesus in her arms. This miraculous event is considered a significant moment in Mexican history, as it marked the beginning of the spread of Christianity in the region and the blending of indigenous and European religious traditions. The image of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe has since become a symbol of Mexican identity and a source of inspiration for millions of people around the world. The tilma, which is kept in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, continues to draw pilgrims from all corners of the globe, who come to pay homage to the miraculous image and seek her intercession.
